100 Lane Award

Welcome to the "100 Lane Award" page.

First of all could we point out that this award is for fun and to try and encourage members of the Devon Group of the TRF to lead a small group of willing (gullible might fit here) TRF riders around the beautiful county of Devon.
It is not a 'race' or a 'challenge' it is simply an award for a job well done.

To qualify for the award the following rules must be adhered to.....
  1. Only a team of current TRF members led by a Devon Group member may receive this award.
  2. All lanes must be in Devon and they must be acknowledged legal lanes.
  3. The team must be of 4 or more riders.
  4. The team must have at least 4 riders at the finish.
  5. A GPS/SatNav Track Log must be presented to the official adjudicator at the end of the ride.
  6. The Track Log must be readable by Memory Map Software
  7. 100 different lanes must be ridden within the 12 hours of daylight. You may re-ride lanes already ridden but the lane number only counts once.
  8. The maximum length of the lane must be ridden unless there is documented evidence as to why the lane could not be ridden in its entirety - photographs of the obstruction etc.
  9. The clock starts when the first lane is entered and finishes when the 12 hours are up.
  10. There is no fee for the attempt but a validation fee of £5 + £2 per successful rider (5 finishers = £15) to have the track log validated and 2 stickers per rider. The stickers are of the logo above
  11. This is not a challenge or a race. To do 100 lanes in 12 hours means you need to average 8.5 lanes per hour and approximately 10mph average speed - if your planning is good!
  12. A photo of the team during the attempt and one at the end of the successful ride is required for inclusion on this webpage
  13. If a lane is being ridden when the time is up that lane will count towards the Award.
  14. The Award is in recognition of good route planning, good plan execution and good teamwork.
  15. The names of the successful team members will be published on this page of the DGTRF website.
  16. The Award attempt must be carried out in the spirit of common sense and fairness.
  17. There is no dispensation for time lost for any reason whether it be mechanical failure, traffic problems, food/rest stops etc.
  18. Notes to assist an attempt are at the bottom of the page...

Notes:
We applaud you attempting to do the 100 lanes. These are some of the salient points of a successful attempt.

1. The team was hand-picked and a date was arranged that suited all. The weekend/bank hols were deemed unsuitable due to extra holiday traffic and more horseriders at the weekends.
Between the 4 riders, it all came down to 1 day.
2. The lanes were all ridden prior to the attempt (many times) so we knew they were all open. The Thursday before the attempt we had a dry run at the second half of the course and covered 86 lanes. This showed us the ones we may have had trouble with and could re-plan the route if necessary.
3.It took 3 weeks to hone the route into a useable format and put it on GPS. Although we only used the GPS twice in our attempt it proved invaluable in those cases.
4.We found out the fuel range of each bike and made sure that the route took us near fuel stations when we needed them.
5. Everybody carried 2 spare tubes and everything to change them. We had an electric compressor which saved a lot of effort.
6. We started with 5 riders in case one dropped out due to illness/mechanical etc. One failed to start due to mechanical misfortune. 4 must finish as this is an award for planning, plan execution and good teamwork. If it was a solo effort the bar would be set at 150.
7. The tracklog has to be forwarded to Brian Sussex and also to the webmaster. Both check the route and it takes a long time. You need to send a list of the lanes you have done, in the order they were done, as an Excel spreadsheet.
8.Try not to do too many return journeys or passing along roads that you've already ridden as this makes the tracklog difficult to read.
9.We sent Brian a set of waymarks on Memory Map to show him our route for the first 100 lanes 4 weeks before our attempt. After that we expanded the route and as you may know we managed more.
10. The time taken to do the 100 lanes is not taken into consideration. It is not a race. If you only want to do 100 lanes (I suggest a few extra to be safe) then quit the ride and get the tracklog and spreadsheet sorted.
11. Ride as a leader followed by a close knit group. The leader needs space in case of an overshoot. You don't want to be run over by the following rider.
12. Try to plan a route using lanes without gates. If you must do gates then the leader opens and anybody else closes. We kept the same running order all day.
13. Do not be afraid to ask for advice. ASK if you need clarification or assistance. We didn't make a mistake all day except for overestimating Tim's fuel consumption. This cost us about 20 mins.
14. Make the smokers roll up a dozen fags before you start!
15. Get your food stops planned. Know where you can get food and hot/cold drinks on your route.
16. We had a maximum road speed of about 50mph. We averaged 16.6mph. You do not need to race. If you break the national speed limit (60) on open road the attempt will be disqualified.
17.If it's heavy rain you will find it's very difficult. Do not be afraid to call it off. We had decided that if it was heavy rain we would just go for a ride until we got cold n wet.
18. The fee - £5 + £2 per rider (4 riders = £13) - is payable the evening of the next monthly meeting after the tracklog has been validated. That is the evening the certificates and stickers get presented.
19. A photo must be taken fairly early on in the attempt of the whole group and one at the end. One of these photos will be pasted onto the 100 lane page of the DGTRF website as well as the names of all the successful riders.
